Compound Overview

Radium-223 dichloride (Ra-223) is an alpha particle–emitting radiopharmaceutical thought to mimic calcium and form complexes with bone mineral hydroxyapatite at areas of high bone turnover.1 Its cytotoxic activity targets the interaction between prostate cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment, suppressing growth of tumor cells, abnormal osteoblast activity, and abnormal bone formation.2 Radium-223 emits high-energy alpha particles of short range (<100 μm) that may induce double-stranded DNA breaks with potential limited exposure to nearby healthy tissue and bone marrow.3,4
